Why search and SEO data costs more than social media data

By FetchAPI · 7 October 2026 · 5 min read

A Google results page costs $0.002 live; 19 TikTok videos cost $0.00002. What drives search, backlink and AI-answer prices: live vs queued, depth, rendering, proxies, link indexes.

One live page of Google results from DataForSEO costs $0.002 for 10 results. One TikTok search through a RapidAPI scraper cost us $0.00002 for 19 videos. Per record, that is about 240 times more for search. Backlink and AI-answer data cost more again: $0.024 for a domain's backlink summary, $0.11 for a check of where a domain is mentioned in AI answers. The reasons are concrete: a search result has to be fetched fresh, often through a rendered browser on a residential proxy; backlinks come from a crawled index of the web that someone has to maintain; and AI answers involve a model run.

What one call buys

Prices per call from our catalogue; the first two rows are real calls we made on 7 October 2026.

Call Price per call What comes back Per 1,000 records
TikTok video search (tiktok-scraper7) $0.0000197 19 videos about $0.001
Google organic results, live (DataForSEO) $0.002 8 organic results + AI overview, video, related searches about $0.25 (organic results)
Google AI Mode answer, live (DataForSEO) $0.004 one AI Mode answer $4
Backlink summary of a domain (DataForSEO) $0.024036 one summary row $24
Backlinks of a domain, 10 rows (DataForSEO) $0.02436 10 backlinks $2.44
Mentions of a domain in AI answers, 10 rows (DataForSEO) $0.11 10 mentions $11

TikTok's per-call price is the scraper's $59 plan for 3,000,000 calls, divided by its quota. DataForSEO is prepaid and pay as you go. Even allowing for quota maths, the gap is orders of magnitude.

One real Google call

curl -X POST "https://fetchapi.co/api/gw/dataforseo/serp/google/organic/live/advanced" \
  -H "x-api-key: $FETCHAPI_KEY" -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '[{"keyword": "web scraping api", "location_code": 2840, "language_code": "en", "depth": 10}]'

It cost $0.002 and returned 11 items: 8 organic results, an AI overview, a video block and related searches. It took 12.3 seconds. The same query a minute earlier took 6.0 seconds, and the TikTok search took 2.1.

AnyAPI google.search $0.0004 4 lanes; up to $0.0009 when a call fails over
Serper $0.001 entry, $0.0003 at volume pay as you go
Oxylabs, Google without JavaScript $0.001 $0.0008 on larger plans
Bright Data SERP API $0.0015 about $0.001 at volume
ScrapingBee Google Search, light / full $0.0025 / $0.0038 10 vs 15 credits
SerpApi $0.025 entry, $0.0092 at volume 250 free searches a month

Our database has 133 providers with routes to Google data. The spread here (about 60x from the cheapest to the dearest entry price) comes from the same causes as in social data, covered in Why the same TikTok data costs 100x more.

What drives the cost

Live vs queued

DataForSEO's three prices for one page are the clearest case. Standard queue is $0.0006, priority $0.0012, live $0.002: 3.3x for an answer in the same request. If you can wait and collect results later, the queue is cheaper. An agent answering a user can't wait, so it pays live prices.

Depth

One unit is one page of 10 results. Since its depth change, DataForSEO bills a top-100 request as 10 pages: $0.006 standard, $0.02 live. The social calls we made returned 12 to 30 records each at a flat price. A search engine returns 10 a page, and you pay for each page.

Rendering and proxies

Scraping APIs publish multipliers, and Google sits at the top of them. ScrapingBee charges 1 credit for a plain request, 5 with JavaScript rendering (its default), 10 with a premium (residential) proxy and 25 with both; its Google Search API is 10 credits for a light request and 15 for a full one. ScrapingAnt charges 10 credits for any request to a Google domain, and 125 for a rendered page on a residential proxy. Oxylabs prices Google without JavaScript at $0.001 a page and any target with JavaScript at $0.00135. Every step from plain fetch to rendered browser on a residential IP costs more, and search engines are where vendors price in those steps.

An index someone has to crawl

Backlinks are not on any one page you could fetch. They come from an index built by crawling the web, which the provider pays to run and keep fresh. That cost shows in the price shape: DataForSEO charges $0.024 per backlinks request plus $0.000036 per row; AnyAPI's seo.backlinks is $0.0288 per call plus $0.00005 per result. Ahrefs' own API works out at about $0.032 for one Domain Rating lookup. AnyAPI also lists ahrefs.backlinks at a flat $0.00501 on a single lane. That is cheaper, and it is one provider with no failover.

AI answers need a model run

AI-visibility data is the newest and dearest. DataForSEO's Google AI Mode is $0.004 live, twice the organic page. Its LLM Mentions API is $0.10 per request plus $0.001 per row; AnyAPI's seo.llm_mentions is $0.12 plus $0.0012 per result. DataForSEO's LLM Responses API charges a task fee plus the model provider's own token charge, so its full price depends on the model and the answer length. AnyAPI's cheapest AI routes are lower (google.ai_mode from $0.0007) because they return a captured AI page rather than an analysed mention index.

How to pay less for search data

  • Ask for 10 results, not 100, unless you need ranks 11 to 100. Depth multiplies the price.
  • Batch keywords where the API allows it. DataForSEO's Google Ads search volume takes up to 1,000 keywords per task for one fee.
  • Set limit on backlink and mention calls. Per-row fees add up; 10 rows of mentions cost $0.11, 1,000 rows $1.10.
  • Cache. Rankings and backlink profiles don't change minute to minute.
  • Use social data where it answers the question. If you want to know what people say about a brand, a Reddit or X search costs a fraction of an AI-mention check. See What one API request really costs.
