Subscription quota vs pay per call: the break-even math for data APIs
A $9 plan for 100,000 calls is $0.00009 a call only if you make all 100,000. Break-even volumes for five real RapidAPI plans against pay-per-call prices, and when each model wins.
A subscription is cheaper than paying per call only above a break-even volume: the plan price divided by the pay-per-call price. Below it, the quota you don't use is money spent for nothing, and it raises the real price of every call you did make. For the five RapidAPI plans below, break-even falls between 15,000 and 98,000 calls a month, and for two of them pay-per-call stays cheaper even if you use the whole quota.
The formula
break-even calls per month = plan price / pay-per-call price
real price per call = plan price / calls you actually made (up to the quota)
Plans are sold as "$9 for 100,000 requests", and catalogues, including ours, show that as $0.00009 a call. That figure is the best case: it is only true in a month where you make all 100,000 calls.
Five real plans against pay-per-call prices
Entry plans from our catalogue (entry_plan in
gateway-catalog.json), each compared with the closest AnyAPI endpoint's
pay-per-call price. AnyAPI charges no monthly fee and has no minimum.
| Listing (platform) | Entry plan | Per call, quota fully used | Pay-per-call comparison | Break-even per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| twitter-api45 (X) | $9 for 100,000, then $0.0001 each | $0.00009 | AnyAPI twitter.search $0.0006 |
15,000 calls |
| reddit-com (Reddit) | $15 for 100,000, hard limit | $0.00015 | AnyAPI reddit.search $0.00038 |
39,474 calls |
| tiktok-scraper7 (TikTok) | $59 for 3,000,000, then $0.00003 each | $0.0000197 | AnyAPI tiktok.search_keyword $0.0006 |
98,334 calls |
| FlashAPI (Instagram) | $9.90 for 10,000 | $0.00099 | AnyAPI instagram.user_posts $0.0008 |
12,375 calls (above the quota) |
| tiktok-api6 (TikTok) | $9.99 for 5,000, then $0.002 each | $0.001998 | AnyAPI tiktok.profile_videos $0.0006 |
16,650 calls (above the quota) |
The last two rows matter most. FlashAPI's quota is 10,000 calls but break-even against $0.0008 is 12,375, so on these prices the plan can't win on cost alone. tiktok-api6 is the same: even fully used, its $0.002 a call is more than 3x AnyAPI's $0.0006, and its overage is $0.002 a call too. You would choose either for its endpoints or its data, not its price.
The other three flip clearly. At 100,000 X calls a month, twitter-api45 costs $9 against $60 pay per call. At 3,000,000 TikTok calls, tiktok-scraper7 costs $59 against $1,800.
A quota you don't use makes every call dearer
Here is twitter-api45's $9 PRO plan at different monthly volumes:
| Calls you make in the month | Real price per call | vs $0.0006 pay per call |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $0.009 (and the free BASIC tier covers 1,000) | 15x more |
| 5,000 | $0.0018 | 3x more |
| 15,000 | $0.0006 | equal |
| 50,000 | $0.00018 | 3.3x less |
| 100,000 | $0.00009 | 6.7x less |
Two details shift the numbers:
- Free tiers. Every listing above has one: twitter-api45 gives 1,000 requests a month, tiktok-scraper7 300, reddit-com 100, tiktok-api6 50, FlashAPI 30. If your volume fits, the right plan is the free one.
- Hard vs soft limits. reddit-com's PRO is a hard limit: call 100,001 fails until the month resets. twitter-api45, tiktok-scraper7 and tiktok-api6 are soft: extra calls are billed at the overage price. A hard limit caps your bill and your throughput. A soft limit caps neither.
Other models sit in between
- Credit packs that don't expire. ScrapeCreators sells $47 for 25,000 credits ($0.00188 a call) and the credits never expire, so unused volume carries over. DataForSEO works the same way: a prepaid balance with a $50 minimum that never expires.
- Daily allowances. EnsembleData's $100 Wood plan gives 1,500 units a day. Our $0.00222 a unit assumes every day's allowance is used; a quiet day's units are gone. Spiky workloads pay more per call on a daily allowance than on a monthly one.
- One subscription per listing. If you need X, Reddit, TikTok and Instagram, the entry plans of twitter-api45, reddit-com, tiktok-scraper7 and FlashAPI add up to $92.90 a month ($9 + $15 + $59 + $9.90) before you make a call. Pay-per-call sellers and gateways spread that across many buyers.
When each one wins
A subscription wins when your volume is steady, sits well above break-even every month, and stays on one listing. A production pipeline pulling 50,000 X searches a month should hold the plan.
Pay per call wins when you are prototyping, when volume is spiky or unknown, when you need several platforms, or when (as with FlashAPI and tiktok-api6 above) the per-call seller is cheaper even at full quota. It also wins when the provider fails some of the time and doesn't charge for failures. That cost is covered in The hidden costs of a data API.
A worked example with the X numbers above: a project makes 20,000 searches in its first month and 2,000 in its second. On twitter-api45's PRO plan that is $9 + $9 = $18. At AnyAPI's $0.0006 a call it is $12 + $1.20 = $13.20. The subscription won the busy month and lost the quiet one by more. Volume that swings from month to month favours pay per call.
For how quota prices make the same data look 100x apart, see Why the same TikTok data costs 100x more from one API than another.
How FetchAPI fits
We hold the entry plans and charge per call at the plan's full-quota price (for example $0.00009 for a twitter-api45 call) times our markup, which is currently 1.0. You get the subscription's best-case price with pay-per-call billing: no monthly fee, failed calls free, and a monthly spending cap on every key. Our price per call can change; the charge recorded with each call is what you pay, as the terms say.
curl -s "https://fetchapi.co/api/gw/rapidapi-twitter-api45/search.php?query=web%20scraping%20api&search_type=Top" \
-H "x-api-key: $FETCHAPI_KEY"
That call returned 19 posts for $0.00009 when we ran it. Per-call prices for every listing are in the catalog and on provider pages such as twitter-api45 and reddit-com. Start with a free key, or connect an agent over MCP.
